Son of the Giant

Son against Father

"She leaned over him. Her hair fell about his face. Her lips came to his. Under the play of her lips, the demanding dark within him seemed to be lighted. To himself he shouted, now, now, a man now . ."

Cliff Kent was the gangling, awkward son of the most prominent man in a small Missouri town. He hated his father because his father was a success— and he was a failure. And he hated him even more deeply because he believed that his father had killed the mother he worshipped. When his father brought home a young, beautiful woman to act as housekeeper, the two men engaged in a deadly conflict for her affections.

This is a superbly told story of hidden violence and tension smouldering beneath small-town respectability, and of a tormented, sensitive boy's struggle to free himself from his father's domination.
